Georges de Feure created this print, "Dame op straat gevolgd door een heer," which translates to "Lady on the street followed by a gentleman," to capture a scene of urban life and social interaction. De Feure, working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often depicted modern women in his art, reflecting the changing roles and visibility of women in public spaces. Here, we see a woman walking down the street, seemingly unaware of the man following her. The man is cloaked and appears to be lurking in the street. The artwork invites us to consider themes of gender, class, and power dynamics in urban society. Who are these people, and what are their stories? De Feure uses a muted color palette and simplified forms to create a sense of atmosphere and intrigue, inviting viewers to imagine the unspoken narratives unfolding in this fleeting moment. The print leaves us contemplating the complexities of social interactions and the gaze in public life.
