This is Albrecht Durer's woodcut, "Saint Christopher," now at the Metropolitan Museum. The composition here is dominated by the large figure of Saint Christopher, wading through water while carrying the Christ Child on his shoulders. Note how Durer’s use of line is particularly striking. Thick, bold lines define the contours of the figures and landscape, creating a strong sense of form and volume. The parallel hatching, or closely spaced lines, are used to create shadows and texture, particularly in the saint’s robes and the surrounding landscape. Look closely to the figure of Saint Christopher, he leans on a staff, and despite the small scale of the print, Durer manages to convey a sense of weight and movement through the intricate linework. We can see the formal and symbolic elements at play, revealing the intersection of artistic technique and religious narrative that invite us to consider the deeper meanings embedded in the image. Durer's masterful use of line and composition serves not only to depict a religious scene but also to engage viewers in a thoughtful contemplation of faith, duty, and the burdens one carries.
