Georges Tasnière created this portrait of Duke Carolus Joannes Amadeus II, sometime between 1632 and 1704. Encircling the young Duke is an oval frame adorned with ribbons and leaves, symbols of celebration and honor. Note the laurel leaves. Since antiquity, the wreath has signified triumph and immortality. We see its echoes in Roman victory arches, Renaissance paintings of emperors, and even modern-day academic awards. The ribbons, often associated with festive occasions, also carry a deeper cultural resonance. In various historical contexts, ribbons symbolize connection, memory, and social bonds. One cannot help but think of the ribbons used in mourning or celebration throughout different eras, reflecting a collective desire to mark significant life passages. These recurring symbols create a powerful force, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level.
