Editor: Here we have Amedeo Modigliani’s “Girl Standing In Black Pinafore” painted in 1918. What strikes me is the almost melancholy atmosphere despite the bright palette. What do you see in the brushstrokes and the overall structure? Curator: The formal elements construct the viewing experience. Consider the subject's elongated neck, a deliberate manipulation of form, repeated throughout his oeuvre. Notice, too, how Modigliani employs color—muted greens and reds juxtaposed with the figure's dark attire. This sets up an interesting dichotomy. Would you agree that this juxtaposition structures the way you approach this work? Editor: Absolutely. I didn't consciously acknowledge the elongation, but I think it affects the subject's overall bearing. Also, the redness of the furniture appears in her cheeks and hands. So how does the artist manipulate our reading of the painting by use of semiotics, or symbols, for example? Curator: One must consider Modigliani's choices to eschew traditional depth, favouring flattened planes, thereby forcing our eye to acknowledge the picture plane. Observe, further, the almost mask-like quality of the girl’s face—her gaze seems averted, drawing attention to the construction of the portrait itself rather than merely the depiction of a girl. What meaning might one glean from such deliberate choices? Editor: The simplification definitely encourages a focus on the composition. It moves the painting toward…artifice. Well, this has changed my perspective completely. I now see beyond the simple representation of a girl in favor of recognizing Modigliani’s hand in constructing this visual experience. Curator: Indeed. Formal analysis provides insight into the artistic choices shaping our aesthetic engagement. We start looking and decoding to reveal new meaning within a work, like unpacking how the use of semiotics shapes this artistic vision and form.
