This little black and white photograph shows a portrait of Dicky Baud with a dog and Wilhelmina van Zijll de Jong. Imagine the photographer, carefully composing the shot, maybe under the harsh sunlight of the day, with Dicky dutifully holding the dog and Wilhelmina standing close by. I wonder what the photographer wanted to capture? Perhaps a moment of connection between a brother and sister? Look at the dog's fur, its strange little face. Was this a beloved pet, a member of the family? It is amazing to me how a tiny gesture, the angle of the dog's head, can convey the relationship between people and animals. It reminds me of Edouard Vuillard, who was amazing at painting interiors. He's another painter who makes me think about how intimate spaces can be filled with emotions and feelings. Like many painters, photographers capture the beauty and complexity of everyday life, inviting us to pause and appreciate the subtle connections that make us human.
