This sheet of vignettes with animals and candles was made by an anonymous artist at an unknown date using an unidentified printmaking technique. The images feel very handmade and textural, as if the artist were figuring out how to make these images as they went along. I love how the artist has arranged the different vignettes on the page, each with its own character and charm. Take a close look at the fox reading a book, surrounded by gothic architecture, there's a real sense of humour in this little tableau. And then there are the rabbits, lined up like a chorus line, each one slightly different from the last. The artist seems to be playing with the possibilities of the medium, experimenting with different ways of creating marks and textures. This kind of process-oriented approach reminds me a lot of artists like Redon or Ensor, who were also interested in exploring the weird and wonderful possibilities of printmaking. Ultimately, this sheet of vignettes is a reminder that art is not about perfection, but about exploration, play, and the joy of discovery.
