Dynamic Universe XXXXI is a painting by Romul Nutiu, made with what looks like enamel paint, maybe even house paint. The fluidity of the paint, the way it’s been swirled and dragged across the surface, feels spontaneous, like he’s letting the medium do its thing. I can see a tension, a sort of push and pull between control and chance. The top half is this creamy, almost fleshy ground, with tendrils of marbled color reaching out. Then there’s that stark horizontal line cutting across, diving into this murky, inky blackness. There’s a real sense of gravity, of things sinking and dissolving. It makes me think of Gerhard Richter’s abstract paintings, where he’s dragging squeegees across the canvas, blurring and distorting the image. Both artists seem interested in the unpredictable nature of paint, embracing the accidents and imperfections that arise. It’s like they’re saying, "Here’s a world in flux, a universe constantly in motion."
