This footed pipe with fluted relief design was made by the Tlatilco people out of earthenware. Looking at this object, you see how the material and process of making are crucial to its appearance. The smooth terracotta clay is shaped into an organic form, reminiscent of a seed pod, or perhaps some kind of insect. The fluted relief decoration is carefully and laboriously applied to the surface of the pipe. As a material, earthenware is readily available, and relatively easy to manipulate. The Tlatilco people would have used simple tools to shape the clay, and fire it in a kiln. In the production of this pipe, there is a dialogue between the hand of the artist and the inherent qualities of the clay, such as plasticity and shrinkage. It’s important to remember that the material and making of an artwork are as significant as its form, challenging traditional distinctions between craft and fine art.
