Radi Nedelchev made this painting, Not From Earth, with what looks like oil on canvas, but who knows, sometime in the 20th century! It’s a wild landscape, kind of desolate, with these rock-like forms under a starry sky. The process seems intuitive, with bold brushstrokes and a palette of purples, yellows, and reds. There’s a lot of texture here. The paint is applied thickly in some areas, creating a sense of depth and physicality. The colors are intense, almost otherworldly, and they give the painting a raw, emotional charge. Take a look at the standing stones, they look like faces or glyphs! Nedelchev reminds me a bit of Hilma af Klint, in the way they both explore unseen realms with such conviction. Of course, art is always a conversation, and these artists speak to each other across time, embracing ambiguity and the multiple possibilities of meaning.
