Domenico Mondo created this drawing of Saint Bridget holding a ship in pen and brown ink with a brush in brown wash. Made in Italy in the 18th century, this drawing presents Saint Bridget, also known as Brigid of Kildare, who, in addition to being a patron saint of Ireland, is also the patron saint of sailors. We see her portrayed with a ship in her hand, which is her traditional attribute and a reference to the legend that she calmed a storm at sea. During the 1700’s, the Catholic Church played a significant role in Italian society, and the creation and display of religious art was closely tied to the Church's power and influence. Artists like Mondo were often commissioned to create works that reinforced religious teachings and values. By studying the religious and cultural context of 18th-century Italy, consulting historical texts, and examining the patronage system of the time, we can gain a deeper understanding of the social and institutional factors that shaped this drawing.
