Cornelis Bloemaert created this print of the Ascension sometime in the 17th century. As an engraving, it was made by carefully cutting lines into a copper plate, inking the surface, and then using a press to transfer the image onto paper. The texture of the image is determined by the artist’s hand, and we can see the decisions he made in the varying thicknesses and densities of the lines. Look closely and you can see how a dense cluster of fine lines creates the shadows and depth of the clouds. Also, notice how the precision and detail afforded by the engraving process contrasts with the ethereal nature of the scene. The tactile process of engraving translates into a visual rendering of a sacred moment, where we see Christ ascending into heaven surrounded by divine light. Prints like this one allowed for the mass production and distribution of images, connecting the artist to a much wider audience. By understanding the material and the making, we gain insight into the cultural role of this striking image.
