Léon Spilliaert created this ominous painting of Ostend’s seawall, depicting an eerie, dream-like nocturnal scene. Born in Ostend, Belgium, Spilliaert spent much of his life in the city, and his intimate familiarity with the landscape is evident in his art. This painting presents a vision of a modern, yet isolating space. The electric lights cast long, spectral reflections and illuminate the scene, but there is no life, no human presence, only the architecture of modernity. You can almost feel the solitude, the starkness, the oppressive weight of the night. There is a strong emotional tension between the safety promised by illumination and the alienation of urban life. Spilliaert does not shy away from the darker side of the modern experience, probing the depths of the human psyche as it grapples with isolation. The picture is a mirror reflecting the unease and existential questioning prevalent during this time.
