Vilhelm Herold made this portrait of Skuespilleren Otto Zinck in bronze, and it's all about process. You can really see how the artist built up the form, layer by layer, with those expressive marks. The texture is everything. The artist hasn’t tried to smooth everything out and hide their tracks. Instead, they've left all these little bumps and ridges that catch the light. Look closely at that bow tie, or the brow, and you can see how the artist worked the material, pinching and pulling, to give it this almost restless energy. It reminds me of Rodin in the way it captures a sense of movement. It makes me think of how we build up our own identities – bit by bit, through all the experiences that leave their mark. Like a conversation between past and present. Is it a finished piece, or a work in progress? It’s both!
