Curatorial notes

Editor: Here we have Frank Duveneck’s marble bust of Charles William Eliot. It is imposing, and seems to capture a powerful presence, but I'm curious about your interpretation of it. What stands out to you? Curator: I find myself drawn to the contrast between the crispness of the marble and the subject's gentle, almost weary expression. I imagine Duveneck saw more than just the president of Harvard; perhaps a man carrying the weight of shaping young minds. Editor: I hadn’t considered the weight of responsibility! Is that softness something you think is intentional, or just a product of the material? Curator: Oh, definitely intentional. Marble can be unforgiving, but Duveneck coaxes out a vulnerability that’s quite moving. It's a reminder that even the most formidable figures have their quiet moments. Editor: That really makes me see it in a new light. I appreciate that. Thanks for the insight!
