Fabio de Sanctis created "Tabouret," a sculpture that looks much like a stool, yet invites us to consider ideas that are far from practical. Born in Italy in 1931, the cultural and political landscape would have influenced de Sanctis to consider the role of design and functionality. "Tabouret" presents an interesting paradox. As a piece of furniture, it implies utility and purpose, however, the sculptural form transcends mere functionality. The smooth, silver finish gives it a futuristic feel, yet the shapes that make up the base are reminiscent of ancient totems, blurring the lines between different cultures and temporalities. As we contemplate "Tabouret," consider the complex interplay between form and function, between design and art. It may well be that de Sanctis asks us to ponder the significance of objects in our lives, and the role of cultural and historical contexts in shaping our perceptions.
