Curatorial notes
This silver vase was made by Carel Begeer, likely in the Netherlands, around 1930. It’s a striking piece because the making of it seems so direct. Look at the hammered surface, a really direct manipulation of the material. Silver is a very workable, ductile material that can be shaped with relative ease. The silversmith coaxes the form into being with patient blows, creating a dimpled texture that catches the light. Notice the inscription at the bottom, confirming that this was made as a gift, between siblings. This vase reflects a conscious choice to value handcraftsmanship at a time when industrial production was becoming increasingly dominant. The labour is evident, not hidden, and contributes to its aesthetic. It bridges the gap between functional object and a work of art, reminding us of the intimate connections between people and the objects they create and exchange. Hopefully this gives you something to think about.
