Reijer Stolk made this piece, Groote wendigheid bezit de Fokker-eendekker, with brush and watercolor. The watercolor washes create a feeling of light and shadow, the artist's hand is really visible through the brushstrokes and the way the colors blend. There’s an immediacy to it, like a quick sketch capturing a fleeting moment of flight. I find myself drawn to the way the artist used watercolor to render the aircraft, the contrast between the solid green and the delicate washes of yellow is very effective. The planes body is built from the bare minimum of information but you instantly know what it is, like a child's drawing. This work reminds me of Stuart Davis, both artists had an interest in graphic design, the built environment and machine age. What is so fascinating about these artists is that their work embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations over fixed or definitive meanings.
