Robert Adams made this photograph, 'Kerstin's grandfather, the family farm, Öglunda, Sweden', with film and light. It feels like a tender observation. The black and white tones create a real sense of depth, from the inky black doorway to the misty grey of the Swedish landscape outside. There's a figure there, just leaving, walking away into the distance. The whole scene is composed like a series of frames, one inside the other, with the lace curtain to the right adding another layer of intricate detail. Look at how the light catches the textured glass in the door, it's almost as if that one panel contains a whole abstract painting in itself. This reminds me a little of Agnes Martin's work, that same quiet attention to the subtle variations within a limited palette. Ultimately, the photograph is about seeing, about looking closely at what's there, and finding beauty in the everyday.
