Here is a collection of portraits by Ch. Reutlinger, carefully arranged in a rectangular format, with the goal of capturing something essential about the depicted people and their relationships. The figures are dressed in white dresses and hats, the man with a bowler hat. I can imagine Reutlinger working in his studio, carefully posing each subject, adjusting the light, thinking about the background and the framing. Photography is like painting, it’s a slow process that requires focus and consideration, each decision matters, from the selection of the backdrop to the angle of the camera. Reutlinger probably understood the materiality of photography well: the graininess of the film, the quality of light, and the chemistry involved in developing a print. I feel a deep connection with Reutlinger, as his work feels like a conversation across time and media; we are all, in some way, responding to each other’s creative gestures. Each artwork is an embodied expression, where uncertainty allows for multiple readings.
