This photographic album page with three portraits, was made by Ch. Reutlinger in the 19th century. The sepia tones feel somehow distant to our modern sensibilities, but they carry a sense of nostalgia and romance. Look at how the subjects are styled, so formally dressed! These sartorial codes speak of a bygone era and another way of understanding the world. The three ladies’ hats each have their own personalities, and the composition of each image feels like a delicate, intimate exchange between photographer and sitter. Reutlinger was a contemporary of Nadar, another prominent Parisian photographer. Like Nadar, Reutlinger captured the spirit of his time through portraiture, but while Nadar's portraits are stark and brooding, Reutlinger's seem delicate and intimate. Art is always about relationships, both to your subject, and to the art that came before.
