Brice Marden’s ‘Dragons’ is a crazy mix of red, yellow and white. I imagine the act of painting it as a sort of dance, a back-and-forth, a coming into being through trial, error, and intuition. I sympathize with Marden and wonder what he might have been thinking when he made it. There’s a real sense of physicality here, a kind of wrestling with the paint itself. The texture looks juicy, those reds and yellows slithering around like the dragons themselves. Is the paint thick, or thin? How does it change the emotional and intellectual feeling of the work? That gesture right there, the way the red loops and coils, it's full of feeling and intention. In a way, these artists are in an ongoing conversation across time, inspiring each other's creativity. It's an embodied expression, embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
