This is a cardboard box for a plaque, by the Koninklijke Utrechtsche Fabriek van Zilverwerken van C.J. Begeer. It’s interesting, isn’t it, how a utilitarian object like this box can also be seen as a piece of design? The beige of the cardboard has a kind of understated elegance, and the way the dark blue logo is printed – well, it’s just so clean and crisp. I like how the logo is printed as if it’s almost an architectural plan. And what about this choice of colour and font? There’s a kind of confidence and simplicity in the aesthetic of the box. It reminds me of some of the minimalist art I’ve seen, where the focus is on the essential qualities of form and material. In that sense, maybe this box can be seen as a kind of everyday sculpture, a testament to the beauty that can be found in the most unassuming places. It’s like Donald Judd made a box!
