Curatorial notes

Editor: This is "Monnik met een vlag," or "Monk with a Flag," an engraving possibly from between 1670 and 1724, by Jacob Gole, housed here at the Rijksmuseum. I'm immediately struck by the... unsettling expression on the monk’s face. It’s almost a grotesque caricature. What do you see in this piece? Curator: This isn't just a caricature, but a complex layering of symbols! Look closely at the "Victoria" flag—it’s not necessarily a patriotic symbol as we'd understand it today. Instead, consider the tradition of religious orders adopting militant imagery. Think about the idea of "spiritual warfare.” Does the pearl rosary contradict that, or reinforce a message about institutional power? Editor: I see what you mean. The flag seems almost absurd placed there. And I hadn’t considered the military connotations of "Victoria" within a religious context. The rosary then becomes less an emblem of piety and more one of...status, perhaps? Curator: Precisely. It’s a sardonic comment, perhaps on the hypocrisy of those claiming spiritual victory through earthly means. Gole invites us to question what "victory" truly means when sought with such... questionable fervor. Does this monk inspire faith, or something else entirely? Editor: Something else. Discomfort, definitely. It's interesting how the symbols, rather than clarifying meaning, create ambiguity. It’s unsettling how this image seems to mock both religious zealotry, while nodding to Baroque tastes for the absurd. Curator: And that ambiguity is key! This image becomes a mirror, reflecting not only the fashions and the polemical currents of its time, but deeper, perennial anxieties about power, faith, and their intersection. Considering these historical and cultural references really enriched my understanding. Editor: Me too! The layers of meaning in this engraving are truly fascinating.
