This vase was made by the Fulper Pottery Company sometime between 1860 and 1955. It has a real sense of the handmade about it. I’m really drawn to the way the blue glaze drips down from the top, meeting the green. It’s a celebration of the materials and what they can do. There’s no hiding the process here, you can imagine the artist watching and encouraging the movement of the glaze. It’s almost like a collaboration between the artist and the kiln. I wonder if the glaze was applied with a brush, or maybe the vase was dipped. The glossy surface reflects the light and adds to the sense of depth and movement in the color. It reminds me a little of the work of George Ohr, another potter who wasn’t afraid to experiment with form and surface. With art, there's no one 'right' way to see or interpret it, and that's part of the fun.
