Max Beckmann made this compositional sketch in pencil in the early part of the 20th century. At first glance, the sketch might appear to be a jumble of lines. But consider it in light of the social and cultural history of Germany in the early 20th century. Beckmann lived through World War I, the rise of the Nazi party, and World War II. His work often reflects the anxiety and unease of the time. While Beckmann was celebrated by museums early in his career, the rise of National Socialism led to him being condemned as a ‘degenerate’ artist. The sketch, although abstract, evokes a sense of chaos and fragmentation, mirroring the tumultuous socio-political landscape of Germany during that time. By studying archival materials related to the artist and the institutions that supported and rejected him, we can better understand the role of art in reflecting and challenging social norms.
