Getal 21
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
This work, called Getal 21, was made by Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries. The piece has a striking aesthetic and is reminiscent of designs from the Art Deco era. We can see the influence of cultural shifts towards geometric designs and streamlined forms. This was a departure from the more ornate styles that came before. What is interesting about this piece is that we don't know its intended purpose. Was it a sketch for a larger project, a study in typography, or something else entirely? Without more information about its use, we are left to consider the artist's vision, particularly how he grappled with modernity. The contrast between the bold black and white and the stylized curves gives the work an emotional resonance. It captures a moment of transition in art history. What do you think it represents?
