Arsenal of Mars
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Editor: This is Matthäus Küsel's "Arsenal of Mars," a rather small print from the Harvard Art Museums. It’s incredibly detailed, almost overwhelmingly so, and creates this grand, theatrical space. What do you make of it? Curator: Ah, yes. It’s like stepping into a fever dream of Baroque splendor, isn't it? All those swirling figures, ornate columns, and a hint of something ominous lurking in the background. It reminds me of stage design, where perspective tricks create fantastical depth. What do you think of its implied narrative? Editor: It feels like a celebration, but with a slight unease, maybe because of the title? I didn't expect so much celebration in an arsenal. Curator: Exactly! It’s a playful tension between war and ceremony. Perhaps Küsel is commenting on the glorification of military power. A thought to ponder as you walk on.
