Curatorial notes

Cornelis Brouwer created this print of the ‘Decor met het winterbos in de Nieuwe Schouwburg te Amsterdam’ sometime in the late 18th century, using etching. At this time, the Dutch Republic was undergoing significant political and social upheaval, influenced by Enlightenment ideals, and challenged by internal divisions and external pressures. The theater served as a crucial public space for cultural expression. Here, the performance, set against a backdrop of stark, leafless trees, probably symbolized themes of conflict, siege, or moral trial. The work’s overt theatricality invites us to consider the relationship between spectacle and reality. The rigid lines of soldiers, contrasted against the kneeling figure, underscore the dynamic between authority and submission, reflecting the era’s hierarchical social structures. What narratives were being produced on stage and for whom? The print offers insight into the intersection of art, politics, and society in the Dutch Republic.
