Entopic Graphomania 1945

Dolfi Trost made this drawing called Entopic Graphomania with ink on paper. I love the automatic quality of this drawing, it feels like it just appeared on the page. The lines make irregular cells, like a honeycomb, or maybe a crazy paving design. The paper has a warm, yellowy tone, and the ink is a thin, dark line. It’s a very dry and immediate way of working – no room for second guessing. The texture of the paper is almost like skin, and the ink sits on the surface, creating a kind of map. Look at the way the lines meet at certain points, creating small knots or junctions. These areas feel like points of connection, or maybe moments of pause in a longer journey. It reminds me of the work of Agnes Martin, who also used simple lines and grids to create meditative spaces. But where Martin's work is calm and ordered, Trost's drawing feels more chaotic and unpredictable. Ultimately, it’s a reminder that art is a conversation, an ongoing exchange of ideas and approaches.
