Curatorial notes
This is "Bespotting van Christus" or "Mocking of Christ" by Christoffel van Sichem II, an engraving created around the early 17th century. The artwork depicts a scene filled with figures rendered through meticulous lines, which create areas of dense shadow and stark light. Notice how the artist organizes the composition. Sichem uses architectural elements such as the archways to frame the central action and guide the viewer's eye. The figures surrounding Christ form a semi-circle, emphasizing his isolation and vulnerability. The lines not only define forms but also convey texture, from the intricate folds of clothing to the smooth surfaces of the columns. The distribution of light plays a critical role. Christ, subtly illuminated, stands in contrast to the darker figures mocking him. Sichem uses light and shadow to create a sense of depth, drawing us into the emotional core of the scene. These structural elements are not just aesthetic choices; they function as a visual language that enhances the narrative, inviting us to contemplate themes of power, injustice, and faith.
