Editor: So, here we have René Bertholo’s mixed media drawing, “Projet Conçu.” It’s a riot of images and colours that gives off a rather playful, whimsical feeling, don't you think? It feels…dreamlike. What's your interpretation of this fantastical composition? Curator: Dreamlike, yes, I think that hits it perfectly. The pastel shades soften what would otherwise be a jarring juxtaposition of forms, from geometric abstraction to naive figuration. Bertholo, I imagine, wanted to represent how the mind plays – a field of dislocated, incongruous objects and symbols bouncing around, colliding… It's like looking at someone's open sketch book. Does it remind you of anything specific? Perhaps a certain style or movement? Editor: It reminds me a bit of Surrealism, perhaps? With its illogical arrangements. Curator: Exactly! And just like with Surrealism, there's a degree of freedom being expressed. Look at the way Bertholo has combined drawing, collage and painting! The work invites us into this free play and reminds me that art is not necessarily just a faithful transcription of life but rather also something produced from within, like a memory being recalled with some omissions and embellishments. There's so much visual incident. What objects stand out for you, if any? Editor: I keep noticing the little house images dotted throughout the work. They’re like little anchors. Curator: They're comforting and somewhat iconic aren't they. Perhaps a representation of ‘home’ in an individual sense or society more widely; somewhere to feel protected, safe... Maybe I am reaching with this though, hmm? Editor: No, I can see it too. It feels almost hopeful amidst the chaos. Thanks for sharing that. It's given me a completely new appreciation for it. Curator: My pleasure entirely! Thinking about what one expects and finding joy in surprises… that’s how to explore an art piece fully, I think.
