Sonia Delaunay, a Ukrainian-French artist, explored the relationship between color and form in her work, exemplified in this piece "Couleurs idees" which translates to "Colored Ideas". Delaunay, along with her husband Robert, developed Simultanism or Orphism, a movement within abstract art, characterized by the use of vibrant color and geometric shapes to create a sense of movement. This aesthetic was a way to challenge traditional modes of representation in the early 20th century. The artwork, with its patterned use of different colors, captures Delaunay's desire to create art that reflected modern life through simultaneous contrasts of color and shapes. Delaunay also applied her concepts to textile and fashion design, demonstrating a commitment to integrating art into everyday life, and challenging the hierarchical distinction between art and craft. By looking at manifestos and exhibition reviews from the period, and delving into the history of applied art, we see art as embedded in social and institutional contexts.
