Dionys van Nijmegen sketched this palace garden, and, though just a study, it stirs a sense of history’s echoes. Note the sphinxes. These hybrid creatures—part human, part animal—originated in ancient Egypt. They guarded tombs and temples. Their presence here, in an 18th-century garden, speaks of a fascination with antiquity, a desire to imbue the present with the wisdom and mystery of the past. Consider the formal garden itself. Order, symmetry, control over nature. These elements resonate with the human impulse to tame chaos, to create a space of harmony and reflection. This search can also be found in the ancient hanging gardens of Babylon, a testament to our collective, subconscious yearning for a paradise on earth. The image touches a deep chord, a collective memory of ages past, reimagining symbols to find solace and understanding.
