Curatorial notes

Anton Mauve sketched this image of a herder with sheep in the Netherlands, using black chalk. The sheep, huddled closely together, remind us of ancient symbols of community and vulnerability. Consider the "Good Shepherd" motif, which dates back to early Christian art in the catacombs of Rome, where Christ is depicted carrying a lamb, a symbol of care and protection. Before that, Greeks used to portray Hermes—a protector of the boundaries of the lands—with a ram or a lamb. The iconography speaks to a deep-seated human need for guidance and security. Here, though, the sheep seem to blend into a more abstract composition. Perhaps Mauve means to depict not the glory of the protector, but a collective yearning for simpler times, a retreat into the pastoral, reflecting a subconscious desire to escape the complexities of modern life. This visual echo resonates across time, a non-linear dance of symbols, ever-changing yet eternally familiar.
