Mario Ballocco, born in 1913, created this untitled work using blue and ochre tones to form a series of nested squares. Ballocco was part of a generation that lived through profound political upheaval in Italy, including the rise and fall of Fascism. Ballocco’s engagement with geometric abstraction can be seen as both a continuation of and a departure from earlier 20th-century avant-gardes. The simple forms and muted colors create a sense of depth and invite contemplation. The concentric squares suggest both expansion and compression, mirroring the individual's experience within larger systems of power. The choice of earthy tones evokes a sense of grounding, of connecting to the land and the body, while the precise geometric structure speaks to a desire for order and control. This piece invites us to reflect on the interplay between our internal selves and external forces. Ballocco's abstraction is an attempt to create a space for contemplation and introspection.
