This print, "Dertien Zegels", presents a collection of thirteen seals rendered with delicate lines by G. Lavalette. The arrangement of the seals, varying in size and shape, creates a tableau that invites close inspection of their intricate details. Each seal is an encapsulation of heraldic symbols and figures, rendered in such a way that emphasizes the symbolic language of power, identity, and belonging in medieval society. The arrangement of circles and pointed oval shapes against the rectangular frame presents a structured system of signs. Each emblem is neatly organized in rows. These emblems invite us to consider their semiotic function. Consider, for instance, how the size and placement of each seal could reflect a hierarchy of importance or influence. Lavalette's work prompts us to ponder the intersection of art, history, and social structure. This intersection allows us to decode visual language that once served to legitimize authority and social order.
