Daniel Dezeuze’s ‘Peintures sur Chevalet’ are like these playful structures that question what a painting can be, using humble materials and everyday objects to invite new ways of seeing. They're not paintings in the traditional sense but more like painted objects that refer to paintings, kinda meta! The materials are so present, you can see the texture of the wood and the way the paint sits on the surface. It’s transparent in some areas and opaque in others, revealing the physicality of the medium and the process of making. Each layer seems to build upon the last, creating a history of marks and gestures that tell a story of its own. The colour palette in each piece creates a different mood, from the earthy reds to the cool blues and greens. Look at the way the paint drips down the legs of the easels, it suggests a sense of movement, or playfulness, and a rejection of perfection. It reminds me a little of Blinky Palermo's spectrum paintings, in the way it breaks down the components of a painting, but in a sculptural, more irreverent way. It embraces ambiguity, inviting us to question our assumptions about art.
