Stefano della Bella created this print, Latona, as part of his 'Game of Mythology' series in the 17th century. The series reflects a period of artistic and intellectual fascination with classical mythology. Here, we see Latona, a mother protecting her children. According to the Roman author Ovid, Latona, fleeing the wrath of Juno, seeks water for her children, Apollo and Diana, but peasants prevent her from drinking. In response to this cruelty, Latona transforms the peasants into frogs. Della Bella has captured the moment of transformation. Look at the emotional intensity of the scene. There is Latona, pointing, perhaps cursing. Look at the figures who have already begun to transform. The etching captures a moment where power, motherhood, and revenge intertwine, and prompts us to reflect on themes of justice and retribution. Della Bella invites us to witness the raw emotions of a mother pushed to her limits, a narrative that resonates through the ages.
