Claes Jansz. Visscher created this engraving titled ‘Visvangst’, or ‘Fishing’, in the Netherlands during the early 17th century. During this period, the Dutch Republic experienced a Golden Age, marked by economic prosperity and cultural flourishing. However, this prosperity was built on complex social hierarchies and unequal access to resources. Visscher’s detailed print captures a slice of Dutch life, where the act of fishing becomes a stage for the performance of social roles and identities. Notice how the figures are grouped, some actively engaged in fishing while others observe or assist. The presence of both finely dressed individuals and those in more modest attire suggests a diverse social landscape enjoying a shared, yet possibly unequal, pastime. The landscape itself, with its mix of natural and built environments, mirrors the blending of tradition and progress characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. Through ‘Visvangst’, Visscher invites us to reflect on the intersections of leisure, labor, and social identity in a rapidly changing world.
