Curatorial notes

Editor: This is "A Wolf Hunt, with a Dead Ram as Bait," by Antonio Tempesta, made as an engraving. It depicts a hunting scene, and I'm struck by the clear depiction of labor involved in hunting. What catches your eye when you look at this piece? Curator: I'm drawn to how Tempesta transforms copper into a narrative about resource control. Think about the material cost of copper in the 16th century, and who had access to it. Does this image celebrate hunting as sport, or does it reveal the economic underpinnings of access to food and land? Editor: That’s a perspective I hadn’t considered before. I was only thinking about the hunt itself. Curator: Exactly. What about the circulation of these prints? Were they luxury items, or a form of mass communication? Considering these questions reframes our understanding of the image. Editor: Seeing it as a record of material production and consumption gives the scene a whole new meaning for me. Thanks for pointing that out!
