Curator: Robert David Gauley's watercolor, "Seascape, Patmos," presents a serene harbor scene. Editor: It's so dreamy! All those soft blues and pinks… feels like a memory fading in the sun. Curator: Patmos, of course, is the Greek island where John is said to have written the Book of Revelation. Gauley's choice of subject, therefore, situates the scene in a rich context of religious and historical significance. Editor: I love that the boat seems to float right out of the landscape itself. It’s not just a picture of a boat, it's more like the idea of a boat. Curator: Indeed, the hazy, almost ethereal quality of the watercolor lends itself to interpretations of longing and spiritual contemplation. The ship, in particular, might symbolize journeys—both physical and spiritual. Editor: Totally. I almost feel like I’m on that boat, sailing into a pastel sunset. Thanks for pointing out the island’s history; I'm seeing the harbor as a portal to new understandings.
