Johann Sadeler I made this engraving, "Getroonde Maria en het Christuskind, met twee heiligen," sometime before his death in 1601. It depicts Mary and the Christ Child enthroned, flanked by saints and attended by angels. Prints like these played a crucial role in disseminating religious imagery across Europe. They were often commissioned by or dedicated to powerful figures, as we can see from the inscription at the bottom addressed to Philipp, Bishop of Regensburg. Sadeler, working in the Netherlands, catered to an international market hungry for devotional images. The visual language here is telling. Mary's elevated position reinforces the Church's hierarchical structure. The saints and angels, with their reverent gestures, model appropriate religious behavior. Even the architectural setting, with its classical motifs, subtly aligns the Church with the authority of the Roman Empire. Art historians use sources like contemporary letters, inventories, and religious treatises to understand the social function of images like this. By situating the artwork within its historical context, we can better understand its meaning and impact.
