This sheet of paper holds drawings by Dankvart Dreyer, created sometime in the first half of the 19th century. Dreyer used pen and brown ink to capture architectural details of Gothic-style windows, along with human figures and writing. The linear quality of ink allows for precise details, seen in the window tracery and the facial features of the figures. The brown ink, likely iron gall ink, has a handmade quality, giving the drawing a warmth and depth that a modern pen might lack. The varying line weights, achieved by applying different pressures to the pen, create depth and shadow, further enhancing the visual texture. The architectural sketches and the human figures, together with the artist's notes, give us a glimpse into Dreyer's artistic process. In essence, it’s a visual record of his thinking, and prompts us to reconsider the labor involved in the production of even a preliminary sketch. It reminds us that behind every finished artwork, there is an unseen process of making and design.
