Curator: This is Jacques Callot's tiny etching, "Saint Eucherius." Look at that detail! Editor: It feels ancient, doesn't it? The saint seems to emerge from the very lines themselves. Curator: Callot, born in 1592, was a master of etching. Notice the delicate cross-hatching that gives form to Saint Eucherius, and the way the lines vary in weight. Editor: It's almost scribbled, but so controlled. Is he blessing something? An altar? Curator: Perhaps. He's shown as a bishop, complete with mitre. Callot's really captured a moment of quiet reverence. Editor: Quiet, yes, but also strangely alive. It makes me think about the power of small things. Curator: I agree. Such a simple image evokes so much. Editor: A little window into a world long past.
