The Vincennes porcelain manufactory crafted this milk jug, or "pot à lait Hébert," likely in the mid-18th century. The dominant impression is one of refined elegance, achieved through its curved form, deep blue ground, and the delicate application of gold leaf. Structurally, the jug presents a study in contrasts: the smooth, cool porcelain against the gilded, textured foliage. A central white reserve contains images of birds; these serve as a focal point, framed by ornate gold borders. The combination creates a visual hierarchy that draws the eye, leading us to consider not only the jug's function but also its symbolic purpose. This piece encapsulates the Rococo aesthetic through its emphasis on asymmetry and decorative excess. Yet, the controlled palette and precise detailing also hint at emerging Neoclassical sensibilities. It’s a sophisticated object, reflecting the shifting tastes of the French court and society.
