Katja Robinski made this ‘Cloche van beige of zachtgele vilt en een leren band die is beschilderd’ with a beige or soft yellow felt and a painted leather strap. The hat reminds me of a cake, or a sculpture, with the soft felt like buttercream, and the painted leather band a decorative flourish. The texture of the felt looks soft and yielding, almost like you could sink your fingers into it. Up close, you can see the painted leather band features small, irregular patterns. It reminds me of Eva Hesse's work, where she embraced the imperfect and handmade. Like Hesse, Robinski seems interested in the process of making, and revealing the hand of the artist. Art's not about perfection, it's about the ongoing conversation between the artist, the materials, and us, the viewers. It’s always an invitation to see things in a new way.
