Carel Adolph Lion Cachet designed these two versions for the border of a 1900 calendar. Cachet worked during the Dutch Art Nouveau, a period of great social change, shaped by industrialization, urbanization, and a growing awareness of national identity. Notice how the letters are integrated into the ornamental, almost architectural design. The bold lines and stylized motifs reflect a desire to create something new, yet they also evoke a sense of history and tradition. There is a tension in the typeface between the modern and the historical. Cachet's design uses visual language that speaks to his cultural heritage. It invites us to consider how we mark time and how the passage of years is interwoven with our personal and collective experiences. The calendar is, after all, a marker of identity, reminding us of our place within the continuum of history.
