This is a cup made by Rörstrand, decorated with a purple dragonfly in relief. In examining this object, we might reflect on the nature of luxury and taste. Consider that porcelain was once an extremely precious commodity. Its rise in popularity in Europe beginning in the 18th century went hand in hand with the rise of industrial production, and with the expansion of consumer culture. Dragonfly motifs were popular during the Art Nouveau period. In what ways does this cup exemplify some of the visual codes of this movement? Is it self-consciously progressive in its design? Historical sources can give us a more complete understanding of this cup. Examining design history, social history, and the economic history of the period may reveal a great deal about the cultural values that are embedded in this object.
