This theekop, or teacup, part of a tea set, was made by Petrus Regout. The matte surface of the cup contrasts with the shiny interior and handle, doesn't it? I really like how the sandy, earthy color covers the exterior, giving it a grounded, almost tactile quality. The band of bright orange around the rim, and the glossy orange handle, just sings. I imagine the potter carefully dipping the cup into the glaze, a process of layering and chance, where the final form emerges through a series of steps. It reminds me a bit of Agnes Martin's subtle paintings. Both invite a kind of quiet contemplation, don't they? A celebration of the beauty found in simplicity and the unexpected joys of the everyday. The imperfections and variations in the glaze add a personal touch, a reminder of the artist's hand and the unique character of each piece. Art isn't just about grand statements, it's also about the small, intimate moments, like holding a warm cup of tea, or witnessing the subtle dance of light across a glazed surface.
