This cup, part of a tea service, was made by Petrus Regout. Looking at it, I can’t help but wonder about the artist, and the work. What might it have been like to make it? There’s this beautiful light-brown glaze with a speckled effect, like very fine sand. The colors are muted and earthy, except for the handle and the thin line around the rim, which are this vibrant orange. I imagine the artist carefully applying the glaze, maybe thinking about how the colors would interact after firing. And the shape! Simple, elegant. It seems to be in conversation with other ceramic artists, each one inspiring and riffing off the other's forms. This cup is like a quiet note in a long conversation. Ultimately, what's so cool about pieces like this is that they remind us how art is this ongoing dialogue across time, where artists are always responding to and learning from each other, inspiring each other to see the world in new ways.
