Moon Pil Shim made this untitled artwork, and it looks like it came into being through layering and arrangement. These parallel lines, mostly in reds, browns, and creams, feel very deliberate. I can imagine Moon Pil Shim, carefully layering and arranging these lines, and the little nests of material underneath, perhaps thinking about repetition, rhythm, and texture. There’s a real physicality to the work, especially in the contrast between the smooth, horizontal lines and the chaotic, tangled nests at the bottom. The paint looks glossy, doesn't it? It almost feels as if it's been built up, layer upon layer, until it's got a kind of sculptural presence. That one single line that extends down into the nest, that little gesture carries so much feeling! It reminds me of Agnes Martin and the way that she repeated lines and grids, but it feels warmer somehow, more earthy. All artists borrow from each other - that’s how we learn, how we push each other to think differently about making and seeing. Painting is ambiguous, it allows for different interpretations and meanings.
