Moon Pil Shim made this untitled piece, and from what I can see, it's an exercise in red and white. The lines are meticulously ruled, and even in the block of red at the top, you sense the commitment to this linear process. I get the sense that this work is about the pleasure of materials: the physicality of the medium, the textures that emerge from the act of applying paint. Look at the lower left, the white section. The paint isn't just flat; it has this gentle, undulating surface, like the stillest waves of the ocean. The color is opaque, built up slowly with such care. I wonder if Agnes Martin ever saw this piece? I’d love to know what she thought. Whether intentionally or not, the painting reminds me that art is just an ongoing conversation, a way of seeing and responding that continues through time.
